Book as Apparatus | Manuel Raeder
Manuel Raeder is a graphic designer and cultural producer, living and working in Berlin. His main focus lies in generating collaborations with artists, scientists, fashion designers, printers, interns, librarians, curators, rappers, photocopiers, book binders, always questioning upon the practice and re-evaluating the position that humans have in relation to their objects. His work operates within a wide range of formats exploring the boundaries between exhibitions, ephemera, books, type design, editing and publishing.
Collective Gestures of Reading
Publishing as Self-institutioning
Another key factor in his work is, how history can constantly be altered and reinvented. "When we live things happen to us, but when we report them we make them happen. A book is a volume expanding into space and time. Time is not linear but can be seen as a flexible tangle."
Meeting with Manuel Raeder entailed discussions on the role and responsibility of the form giver: how the structure of the book can function as an apparatus, mobilizing and generating particular content.
