Collective Gestures of Reading  | Department of Reading, Berlin
Inga Zimprich/Sönke Hallmann

Inga Zimprich and Sönke Hallmann are both involved in artistic initiatives of Faculty of Invisibility and Department of Reading. The Faculty of Invisibility attempts to develop a practice of speech that runs through constitutive moments within institutions. Since 2006 it issues its experiences in various forms of correspondences. The Faculty of Invisibility is conducted as an exemplary institution with changing participants.

In 2010 Department of Reading published Echo's Book, which assembled the writings and readings of the Symposium for Readers event (Berlin, 2007). Made of two adjacent volumes, the book consists of four parallel columns. It works as if the reader had two books opened next to each other. Fragments of the readings and writings are echoed within the two inner pages, in the double space that presents itself at the centre of this book. Here the figure of Echo, repeating phrases once in a while, makes a text recognizable that has produced itself at the margins of the symposium.

During the meeting, the participants discussed performative ways how to work with both “publishing” and issuing experience on one end and collective act of reading on the other.
