ÅSA STJERNA

______SubAqua: a public site-specific sound installation

in cooperation between rum46 and the SPOR festival 2010.

SubAqua is a site-specific sound installation first time realized for the Hafencity in Hamburg in June 2009 as a winning SubAqua winning concept in a competition  initiated by KLANG! Hamburg: A cultural network in Germany with the aim to support and locate contemporary music outside the ordinary concert halls. The installation was based on sounds from the sub-aquatic soundscape in the area, which had been recorded with underwater microphones by the artist and then artistically transformed. The sound material was resonating through six periscope like metal tubes connected to concrete fundaments which also hosted part of the equipment. Just as the Hafencity in Hamburg, the identity of Århus is closely connected to water.

During a residence in April 2010 at rum46 Åsa Stjerna will investigate the urban underwater soundscape in the city to create a new version of SubAqua, uniquely based on sounds from the underwater soundscape of Århus. The intention with SubAqua is to make visible this sub-aquatic landscape of the area and to create an acoustical map of this normally hidden and unrecognized part of the public space. The sound installation will be exhibited during the SPOR festival, in Århus in May 2010. During the SPOR festival Åsa Stjerna will also make a presentation at rum46, discussing some of her  sound works in the public space.
