SIGNAL – Center for Contemporary Art
Södra Skolgatan 31, 214 31 Malmö
SWEDEN
www.signalsignal.orgSignal is a contemporary art centre based in Malmö, Sweden. Signal’s focus is on producing exhibitions, stimulating discussion and organizing lectures and events as well as promoting contacts between local, national and international art scenes. Founded in 1998 Signal is currently run by a group of artists and curators—Carl Lindh, Emma Reichert, Fredrik Strid, Elena Tzotzi—who collaboratively formulate the programme of events. The main focus is on showing, producing and discussing Swedish and international contemporary art as well as developing a collaborative curatorial praxis. Through the years, different forms of collaboration have been tried and reviewed in an attempt to develop a dynamic practice that involves and reflects contemporary needs and forms of expression. Signal’s function in disseminating knowledge and creating contacts has always been a fundamental aspect of its operations. Signal produces from four to six exhibitions every year, both curated group shows and solo presentations and often involve site-specific productions. Much emphasis is placed on dialogue with the artists and with experimenting and challenging the exhibition format. Exhibitions may address significant current topics in society, aspects of artistic processes and investigation thereof, and discuss the relationship between art and, for example, politics or journalism, or place art history in a contemporary perspective.
Signal collaborates on a continuing basis with other exhibition venues, galleries and art institutions in Malmö, elsewhere in Sweden and internationally in connection with exchanges, exhibitions and projects and is thus an active participant in the national and international art scene. It is a non-profit organization and receives financial support from the Arts Committee of the Municipality of Malmö, the Swedish Arts Council and Kultur Skåne.
